Instant
Messaging SDK Revenue Opportunities:
Instant messaging (IM) is one of the most popular
methods of communication today. Every day, IM users send billions
of IM messages among themselves. All of this messaging traffic is
however generating little or no revenues because IM usage is mostly
limited to the PC world where no billing models for consumer IM
services exist.
Mobile operators, on the other hand, charge subscribers for mobile
messaging services such as SMS and MMS, as well as for Internet
connectivity on their mobile phones. By mobilizing existing IM services,
mobile operators are therefore in a position to offer subscribers
mobile access to an already established communication phenomenon
while generating, for the first time, real revenues from the usage
of IM services.
The key to driving mass market usage of mobile IM is to ensure
IM is a core service on mobile phones, much like SMS. With the introduction
of phones that have embedded IM clients based on the Open Mobile
Alliance (OMA) IMPS specifications; major phone vendors are ensuring
that IM is in fact becoming a truly ubiquitous service on mobile
phones. The remaining piece of the mobile IM puzzle is however the
infrastructure needed by mobile operators to effectively bill for
IM services, ensure compliancy with standard-based mobile IM clients,
ensure privacy for subscribers and to maintain control over mobile
IM services. For this purpose, mobile operators need the BuddyStream
Mobile Instant Messaging SDK.
